Eight clear glass shades set at staggered heights on a black metal frame, following a nineteenth-century French arrangement. The glass leaves the filament visible, so the light has a point of origin rather than a diffuse glow.

Sizing & placement
At two and a half feet across and two feet deep, this sits comfortably over a dining table hung 30 to 36 inches above the surface. The 1.8 m cord gives enough length for a stairwell or a double-height living room, where the staggered shades can be read from more than one level. Because the filament is visible, choose bulbs you are happy to look at.
