In a dining room, hold the lowest ring 30 to 34 inches above the table and match the ring diameter to roughly half the table width. The two- and three-ring versions occupy nearly four feet of vertical space, so they belong over a stairwell, an entryway void or a room with ceilings above nine feet. Over a kitchen island or a console, a single 23.6″ ring is usually the right restraint.
